Meet your hosts, Janice and Derek. We have been hosting and travelling with Airbnb since 2011, and in 2019, we made the best decision ever to relocate our hosting business to the balmy, breathtaking Whangarei District.
We absolutely adore the stunning beaches, picturesque walks, lively food scene, and friendly Northland locals. That is why we snapped up our dreamy Manganese Point hideaway in Tamaterau to share with loved ones and travellers alike.
Our harbourside haven is a true passion project, keeping us busy with regular updates, styling, and looking after the native forest and orchard. Our own global travels fuel our hosting spirit. Janice is a museum, beach, and garden fanatic, while Derek is a photography enthusiast—you will find many of his custom prints on display right inside the apartment!

Our location
Salt Haven offers a Whangarei harbourside stay on Manganese Point, in the Northland seaside settlement of Tamaterau. Our location is known for its subtropical climate and interesting coast, beaches, gardens, and forests.
The vibrant Whangarei region awaits you. Whangarei is on the North Island of New Zealand, in Northland, close to the Bay of Islands.
Only a 20-minute car ride from Whangarei City’s famous Town Basin, and the beaches and walking trails of the Whangarei Heads are at our doorstep. Whangarei is the gateway to Northland, travel only an hour north to visit the Bay of Islands and travel 3 hours south to arrive in Central Auckland.

About our holiday apartment
In a private corner of the garden lies our unique holiday apartment decked out in a Kiwiana Bach theme. So, what is a Kiwiana Bach? We think a Bach is a humble house by the sea, which is what we offer. In fact, the apartment is the original 1970s, Bach!
Inside, you will find a fun holiday apartment, suitable for up to four guests, with a kitchenette, sofa and dining in the open plan living space that also includes a two bed sleeping nook. The living area links to the master bedroom with a queen bed and bathroom for a bit of luxury. Cooking is in the outdoor kitchen under the covered verandah (Bach style). All the benefits of a stay in nature, with the advantages of a good bathroom and nice linen.
A special feature of our property is the rustic path through the forest to a swimmable secluded beach at our boundary.
This is more than a few trinkets; it’s an opportunity to experience a classic New Zealand holiday. Relax on the covered verandah overlooking a charming citrus orchard and throw a steak on the BBQ.
