Meet your hosts Janice and Derek. In 2019, we decided to retire in style to the balmy, breathtaking region of Whangarei. We adore the stunning beaches, the picturesque walks, lively food scene and the friendly Northland locals. That’s why we snapped up our dreamy Manganese Point hideaway to share with loved ones and guests alike.

Our Manganese Point haven is a passion project, keeping us busy with rounds of paint and renovation. Our love of travel also fuels our hosting passions. Janice is a natural history, museum, beach, and garden fanatic, while Derek is a photography enthusiast. You will find his pictures on display in the apartment. We joined the Airbnb in 2011 and we’ve been hosting and travelling ever since. Our guest accommodation is in the original 1970’s Bach that is renovated to offer facilities inspired by our favorite stays. Now our guests have the opportunity to book direct on this web site.

We hope you’ll have a blast during your stay with us!

About our holiday apartment

In a private corner of the garden lies our unique holiday apartment decked out in a Kiwiana Bach theme. So, what is a Kiwiana Bach? We think a Bach is a humble house by the sea which is what we offer. In fact. the apartment is the original 1970’s Bach!

Inside, you will find a spacious studio, suitable for up to four guests, with a kitchenette, sofa and dining in the open plan living space that also includes the 2 single beds. The living area links to the master bedroom with a queen bed and bathroom for a bit of luxury. Cooking is in the outdoor kitchen under the covered verandah (Bach style). All the benefits of a stay in nature with the advantages of a good bathroom and nice linen.

A special feature of our property is the rustic path through the forest to a swimmable secluded beach at our boundary.

This is more than a few trinkets it’s an opportunity to experience a classic New Zealand holiday. Relax on the covered verandah overlooking a charming citrus orchard and throw a steak on the BBQ.

“Such a lovely spot with beautiful views! Had a wonderful stay and Janice was a great host. Loved having the beach so close by and being surrounded by nature was so relaxing. Definitely recommend!”
